The Voronoi diagram, also known as the Voronoi tessellation, is a geometric concept that divides a given space into regions based on a set of points. It takes its name from the Russian mathematician Georgy Voronoi who introduced this idea in 1908. This diagram is widely used in various fields such as computer science, mathematics, physics, and biology.

The main idea behind the Voronoi diagram is to partition a space into cells, where each cell corresponds to one of the input points. These cells are defined by the region in the space that is closer to a particular point than any other point in the set. In simpler terms, it creates boundaries around each point where all the locations within a boundary are closer to that point than any other point.

To construct a Voronoi diagram, one can imagine drawing perpendicular bisectors between each pair of neighboring points. The intersection points of these bisectors form the vertices of the Voronoi cells. Each cell consists of all the points that are closer to a particular point in the set than to any other point.

Voronoi diagrams have numerous applications in different domains. For instance, they are commonly used in computer graphics for generating textures, in image segmentation and pattern recognition to define regions of interest, and in computational geometry for solving problems related to nearest neighbor search and spatial optimization.
